Henry Scott Tuke (British, Newlyn School, 1858-1929), oil on canvas backed board, ‘Facing South’, signed ‘H.S.Tuke 1913’, framed and glazed, subject size 45cm x 29.5cm.Provenance of the painting ‘Facing South’ R1118 & its frame.Directly from the artist Henry Scott Tuke to Captain C. E. Parkes to Tony Martin of Looe, Cornwall.‘Facing South’ was purchased by Capt. C. E. Parkes, who was a Master Mariner for the British India Oil Co and lived in London.He purchased the painting directly from the artist on the 23rd March 1925 from Tuke’s London home, ‘Visit from C. E. Parkes. British India officer who bought six studies & sketches which Charlie (Mitchell) had sent from Falmouth’ (a)In an interview carried out by Brian D. Price as part of his ‘Tuke Reminiscences Collection’ with Capt. Parkes at his home ‘Seaham’ Carlyon Road, St. Austell on the 13th September 1962, further details came to light. (He had relocated from London to St. Austell in 1935).He states ‘That one [Facing South] would not be framed, I knew a man in London who did them very reasonably’ further he informs details about the brass tablet ‘’This one [Facing South] I definitely got printed’ (b)Gifted by Capt. Copy held at Tate Britain.‘Facing South’ R1118 by Henry Scott Tuke RA, RWS, signed and dated.Painted on the spot en plein air on Newporth beach, Falmouth, in the summer of 1918, this expressively painted nude study captures the vibrant colours of light reflected from the sky and sea on the human skin. He would have painted it rapidly with bold impressionist brushwork.The model is Charlie Mitchell (1885-1957). Who was not only Tuke’s favourite model, he was also in charge of looking after Tuke’s boats and in later years became his general factotum. His long back was a familiar feature of many paintings for over a period in excess of 25 years, a much longer period than any of Tuke’s other models. A testament to their long association and friendship is that Tuke bequeathed him the sum of £1,000 in his will.Whilst this painting is detailed as a ‘Sketch’ in Tuke’s own painting’s Register, it is a most glorious finished study of Tuke’s painting at the height of his powers. It is both vibrant and evocative of his painting technique. Further it is housed in its original frame dating from 1925.It was common practice for Tuke to paint many ‘Sketches’, before undertaking a major work, sadly very few survive.They were meant to be just for his own personal use, rarely signed and most were disposed of, after his death in 1929.This makes this survivor even more scarce.This study (R1118) formed the basis for a much larger work that Tuke was to undertake in the summer of 1920, which also carries the title of ‘Facing South’ (R950) and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1921, number 108. The models were Charlie Mitchell, the standing figure & Colin Kennedy the croucher. It was sold for a sum of £420 to M.B Davie of Surbiton.
